While the stage churned out music by Jade Barbee, Lovely Day and the band HUMANWINE flames rose into the air and the students learned how waste plastic can be a powerful rural electricity solution and also about the benefits of recycling.

The visit is part of the Afrikaburn outreach program through their Blank Canvas Express initiative helping drive community science education through fiery fun in one of South Africa’s most economically challenged provinces. Helping bring the magic, the education and the music of South Africa’s most famous art festival to young minds thirsty for all three is what the Dung Beetle does best!

Kids from the Boesmanland High School in Pofadder, South Africa interact with the Dung Beetle Sculpture after the engagement talks from the Dung Beetle stage as part of the collaboration between Alliance Earth's Dung Beetle Project and the Afrikburn Art event for public outreach, called Blank Canvas Express. The waste plastic that poweres the stage is first shredded by the Plastisaurus Wrecks and then fed to power the Pyrolitic reation that runs the Dung Beetle Project's moving art stage within this recycled steel sculpture

The Dung Beetle stage on the move up Van Rynspas on it's way to the Afrikaburn Art Festival. The goal of turning plastic waste into liquid fuel has been achieved and now we are transmuting that greasy goo into cleaner and greener beetle gold. Our original distilled diesel we made worked on older diesel cars and generators but wasn’t quite up to our very high better-than-diesel-at-the-pump standard.

See, we don’t just want to make more dirty fuel, we want it cleaner, greener, meaner and most importantly less polluting than regular diesel. The good news is that we have pretty much made it there, with less nasty sulfur and cloudy pollutants, super low kerosene levels, and a good burn profile. Producing around 70% diesel from plastic waste while also generating electricity is a feat in itself, but making that fuel useful to everyone and less damaging to the planet is out of this world!

Great job Pierre Pretorius, Marshal Matsveru, Greg Long and Themba Masoeu, you guys put the fire in the Beetle.

Dung Beetle Project Director Jeffrey Barbee joins Steve Blair in Delta County, where they are lining up suppliers and possible sites to create the first Dung Beetle in the US. Steve is a marine biologist with a passion for removing plastic from the oceans, and he is helping kickstart our Dung Beetle technology rollout as the Managing Director of the Dung Beetle Project in Colorado. They are joined by videographer Peter Pawlowsky, who runs the Locksley Project  Peter travels the world sharing the stories of individuals who are making a difference.
